Frequently Asked Questions

We'll try to answer here most of the questions you may have before your first visit. You may find needed information on some of our other website pages as well.

Please contact us if you have issues we've not addressed. Contact information is at the lower left of your screen.

How long does the service last?

About an hour. Between the two services we have "coffee and conversation" in front of the sanctuary - weather permitting.

Where do I sit?

Anywhere you like. We do not reserve pews. You will not be taking anyone's seat.

What should I wear?

Some people wear "Sunday" Clothes while others dress more casually. We're pretty laid back. The pastor, choir and band members do not wear robes. The church is heated and air conditioned, so dress accordingly.

Will I be asked to stand up and introduce myself?

Absolutely not. We do ask that you either sign our guest book or fill out a "Welcome Card" to let us know you were there, but neither is a requirement.

Do I have to pay any money?

No. Offering plates are passed during the first service. The plates are located in the back of the church for the second service. It's totally up to you whether or not you drop in any money.

What about communion?

We have communion every week. It is dispensed by ushers (we call them deacons) at both services. You'll be instructed to take and eat the bread or wafer, but hold the cup until after a prayer; we then drink the cup contents (juice) together. ALL are welcome to take communion as it is the Lord's table, and He welcomes everyone.

What about people with disabilities?

Our entries, sanctuary, upper fellowship hall and bathrooms are all accessible for people with disabilities. Currently we do not have signers for the hearing impaired.

I have children. What about them?

We have a nursery with an adult attendant for children aged 2 and under. Ask anyone you see where the room is located. Someone will go with you to sign them in. For older children, we have a Children's Minister who will take all the children to a classroom shortly after the service begins. After the service, you will need to go to the children's wing to pick them up. Again, ask anyone you see to take you there. Also, we have vibrating beepers to alert you during the service if you are needed to attend your child. We have an active youth program for middle and high schoolers. The first time you attend, they may prefer to stay with you during the service.

What about religious education for adults?

If you grew up in a protestant church, you may have gone to both Sunday school and church. We do not have that at First Christian. However, we have a number of smaller groups that meet during the week, including the Wednesday night study time. We also have groups that meet monthly. Check out our calendar.

What are the sermons like?

Lately, we have been posting Steve's sermons on the web. Follow this link to hear some of them. Note: the sermons are only part of our worship experience. We are a community of people, and the sermons in isolation will not reflect that. We encourage you to come to share our community in person.

How do you Baptize people?

Baptism is by immersion when requested. In some denominations, this may be called confirmation. In lieu of infant baptisms, Disciples of Christ congregations have infant dedications.
